THE OPPORTUNITY
As the Environmental Services Aide, you perform general and specific duties in assigned areas in accordance with Environmental Services (Housekeeping) Department standard of practice, policies and procedures. The principal responsibilities include: cleaning and maintaining patient rooms, hallways, kitchens, bathrooms, offices, etc. Removing recyclables and waste from multiple locations; performing floor care, within scope of authority, cleaning, disinfecting and maintaining elevators and stairs; performing other duties in support of the housekeeping function; performing cross-functional and other duties as assigned and/or required.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Cleaning and disinfection of patient and non-patient rooms
  • Cleaning and Disinfection of specialty areas which include but not limited to the Birthing Unit, Surgical Studies, Neonatal Intensive Care, Diagnostic Imaging
  • Performs weekly and monthly project cleaning as required
  • Change patient room and shower curtains as required
  • Curtain changing with ladder 6-8ft in height
  • Wall washing
  • Elevator Cleaning to include tracks
  • Extracting carpets and upholstered furniture
  • Handling and transporting all types of waste in healthcare
  • Operation of floor cleaning equipment not limited to burnishes, auto scrubbers, extractors, vacuums
  • Responsible for the daily care of equipment after each use
  • Restock designated housekeeping closets with supply
  • Clean housekeeping closets and tools associated with the tasks
  • To report health & safety related concerns through the incident management system
  • Report broken equipment and tag as appropriate
  • Adheres to infection control guidelines

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
The ideal candidate will possess the following key competencies, record of experience and academic preparation:

  • Grade 12 Diploma or recognized equivalent required
  • Previous Experience working in a housekeeping department is an asset
  • Ability to effectively Communicate, both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to function independently
  • Ability to operate commercial floor cleaning equipment common to the work being performed including, vacuum, dry mop, auto scrubber, polisher etc.
  • Must be well organized, motivated and be able to handle a constant and varied workload, adjust priorities and able to be flexible
  • Familiar with WHMIS, chemical and dilution rates
  • Familiar in handling/transporting different types of waste in healthcare
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the job including – standing, sweeping, pushing/pulling carts, reaching forward and above and blow the shoulders, able to lift up to 15kg
  • Ability to perform duties in a professional and courteous manner and produce high quality work while meeting deadlines in accordance with GBGH standards
  • Exercise initiative and good judgement with ability to multi-task and work independently
  • Knowledge of the Occupational Health & Safety Act and other relevant legislation
  • Compliance with Body Substance Precautions provision, sanitary and infection control requirements, confidentiality requirements
  • Ability to adapt to change in a fast-paced working environment
  • Demonstrated consistent punctuality and attendance record, maintaining a high level of reliability and commitment to performing duties with efficiency and effectiveness in previous roles

  • As a partially designated French speaking organization, French verbal and written communication skills are considered an asset in this position

HOURS OF WORK
Temporary Part Time. Shifts and hours may change according to departmental requirements and as per the SEIU collective agreement.

COMPENSATION

  • Hourly rate of pay $28.79-$29.46, plus additional 14% in lieu of benefits and 4% in lieu of vacation to start
